Ehmber Support

Ehmber is a free notes app built around returning, not storing. Built and published by JC Mobile App Studio LLC.

The basics

What is Ehmber?

Ehmber is a notes app built around returning, not storing. You hold the ehmber, say what's on your mind, and let go. If the thought needs to come back, Ehmber brings it back on the day you named, or the morning you're meeting the person it's about.

There are no folders to keep tidy. Notes stay warm while you touch them and cool when you don't, and once a week Ehmber asks you about a few cooling notes so the pile never forms.

How much does it cost?

Nothing. Ehmber is free, all of it: voice capture, returns, the weekly ehmbers, widgets, and iCloud sync. There are no in-app purchases, no ads, and no subscription.

It's made by JC Mobile App Studio. If you like it, the studio's other apps are listed in Settings, under From the studio.

Which devices does it run on?

iPhone and iPad with iOS 26 or later, including the iPhone Duo. On iPad, the iPhone Duo unfolded, and iPhone in landscape, Ehmber uses two panes: the stream on the left and the open note on the right.

An Android version for phones, tablets and foldables is on Google Play.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up and no login. Your notes are files on your device, and in your own iCloud Drive if you turn sync on.

Which languages does it support?

English for now, for both the app and speech recognition. Ehmber understands dates and names in English phrases like "Friday morning" or "when I see Sam".

Capturing a thought

How do I capture a note?

Press and hold the round ehmber at the bottom of the screen, say what's on your mind, and let go. Your words appear as you speak. That's the only gesture to learn.

Prefer typing? Tap Type next to the ehmber, write the note, and tap the arrow. Tap Voice to switch back.

Nothing records when I hold the ehmber

The first time, iOS asks for the microphone and speech recognition. Allow both. If you said no, turn them on in iPhone Settings › Apps › Ehmber.

Ehmber also downloads Apple's on-device speech model the first time. Until it's ready you'll see "Preparing on-device speech" under the ehmber. If you let go before it finishes, wait a moment and hold again.

Is my voice sent anywhere?

No. Ehmber uses Apple's on-device speech recognition whenever your iPhone supports it, so the audio and the words stay on your device. Ehmber never records or keeps audio, only the text you see.

What happens if I let go without saying anything?

Nothing is saved. Ehmber goes quietly back to the stream.

Can I edit a note after I've captured it?

Yes. Tap the note to open it, then tap the text to edit it. Changes are saved as you go, straight to the note's file.

The one question

Why does Ehmber ask me a question?

If a thought sounds like something to do and you didn't say when, Ehmber asks once: when you next see that person, or on a day? It asks out loud after a voice capture, and shows the question on screen after a typed one.

Answer out loud, tap a choice, or tap Just keep it. If you say nothing, the note is simply kept. Ehmber never asks twice about the same note.

Can I make it ask less?

It learns on its own. Once you've answered the same way at least three times out of four for a kind of note, Ehmber stops asking and picks that answer for you.

Settings, under The one question, shows your question rate. Turn off Ask out loud if you'd rather read the question than hear it.

How do I skip the question entirely?

Say when in the note itself. "Call the bank tomorrow" or "Ask Sam about the invoice when I see him" already has its answer, so Ehmber just saves it and tells you when it'll come back.

Which date phrases does Ehmber understand?

Today, tonight, this evening, tomorrow, tomorrow morning, the day after tomorrow, any weekday ("Friday", "next Friday", "Friday evening"), this weekend, next week, next month, the end of the month, and "in 3 days", "in 2 weeks" or "in 6 months". It also understands times like "at 3", "at 8:30 am", noon, "in the morning" or "in the afternoon".

Without a time, mornings mean 8 AM and evenings mean 6 PM.

The voice sounds robotic

That's iOS's compact voice. Download a natural one: iPhone Settings › Accessibility › Spoken Content › Voices › English, then pick a voice marked Enhanced or Premium.

Ehmber uses the best installed natural voice automatically. You can choose between them, and hear each one, in Settings under Ehmber's voice.

Returns

How does a note come back?

On the day and time you named, Ehmber sends a notification. Notes about a person or an event come back the morning you're meeting them. Returned notes wait at the top of the stream under Back to you.

From the notification, tap Rekindle to open the note, or Release to let it go. In the app, tap Done when you've handled it, or Later to bring it back again.

What does Later do?

Later moves a returned note to Tonight, Tomorrow morning, End of week, or a day and time you pick. It leaves Back to you and comes back then.

How do person and event returns work?

Ehmber looks at your calendar for the next day and a half. When a person's name or an event you mentioned shows up in an event title or its attendees, the note comes back at 7:30 that morning, or two hours before the event if that's later.

This needs calendar access: allow it when asked, or in Settings under Returns. Ehmber only reads your calendar and never writes to it.

A note about a person never came back

Check that Calendar is allowed in Settings under Returns, and that the person's name, at least their first name, appears in the event title or attendee list.

Contacts access is optional but helps Ehmber recognize names when you capture. It only reads given names, on your device.

I'm not getting notifications

Make sure notifications are allowed in iPhone Settings › Notifications › Ehmber. Focus modes can also hold them back. Ehmber sends only two kinds: a note coming back, and the weekly ehmbers reminder.

Returned notes still appear under Back to you even if the notification was silenced.

How do I change or remove a note's return?

Open the note. Under Comes back, pick Tomorrow, End of week, Pick a day, With a person, or At an event. Tap Let it cool to remove the return and simply keep the note.

The stream, heat, and the weekly ehmbers

Why aren't there folders?

Folders turn into chores. Ehmber orders the stream by warmth instead: notes you touch stay near the top, and ones you leave alone slowly cool and sink. The ehmber dot beside each note shows how warm it is.

What does cooling mean? Are notes deleted?

Nothing is ever deleted for you. A cooled note drops below a fold at the bottom of the stream. Tap the fold to see them, and search always finds them.

Choose how fast notes cool in Settings under Warmth: Gentle keeps a note warm for about two weeks, Steady for about a week, and Quick lets it cool within a few days.

What are the weekly ehmbers?

Once a week Ehmber picks up to five notes that are cooling and asks about each: Rekindle to warm it up, Act to give it a return, or Release to let it go. It takes about two minutes.

It's ready on Sunday at 6 PM by default. Change the day and time in Settings under Weekly ehmbers. Open it any time with the flame button at the top of the stream.

What happens to a released note? Can I get it back?

It moves to Released. Scroll to the bottom of the stream and tap Released to see them. Nothing is lost: open a released note and bring it back to the stream.

Released is the only place where you can delete a note for good, and Ehmber asks you to confirm first.

How do I search?

Tap the magnifying glass at the top of the stream. Search covers every note, including cooled ones.

Your files, iCloud and restore

Where are my notes stored?

Every note is a plain Markdown file. Open the Files app, then On My iPhone › Ehmber, or iCloud Drive › Ehmber with sync on. Notes are in the Notes folder, and released notes in Archive.

You can open, copy or back up these files with any app. A short header at the top of each file holds the note's details, such as when it comes back.

How do I sync between iPhone and iPad?

Turn on Sync with iCloud in Settings under iCloud, on each device, signed in to the same Apple Account. Your files move to iCloud Drive › Ehmber and stay in step. Turn sync off and they move back to the device.

I reinstalled Ehmber or got a new iPhone. How do I get my notes back?

Go to Settings, under iCloud, and tap Restore from iCloud. It pulls every note in iCloud Drive › Ehmber back onto the device.

On a fresh install, if Ehmber finds notes waiting in iCloud, it offers to restore them at the top of the stream.

Does Ehmber work offline?

Yes. Capture, on-device speech, returns, search and the widget all work without a connection. With iCloud sync on, changes catch up when you're back online.

Two devices edited the same note. What happens?

Ehmber keeps the most recent version and resolves the conflict for you, so you don't end up with duplicates.

Widgets

How do I add the widget?

Touch and hold the Home Screen, tap Edit, then Add Widget, and search for Ehmber. Choose a size and tap Add Widget.

The small size shows the thought that matters most right now. Medium and large show a slice of the stream, and extra large on iPad shows two columns. Tap a note to open it.

Is there a Lock Screen widget?

Yes. Touch and hold the Lock Screen, tap Customize, choose the Lock Screen, tap the widget area, and add Ehmber. There are rectangular, circular and inline sizes.

The widget isn't updating

iOS refreshes widgets on its own schedule. Opening Ehmber updates it right away. If it still looks stale, remove the widget and add it again.

Privacy

What data does Ehmber collect?

None. There are no analytics, no ads, no tracking and no account. Ehmber has no server of its own.

Your notes live on your device, or in your own iCloud Drive if you turn sync on. The full policy is linked at the bottom of this page.

Why does Ehmber ask for Calendar and Contacts?

Calendar lets a note come back the morning you meet someone. Contacts helps Ehmber recognize names when you capture. Both are optional, read-only, and stay on your device. Without them, Ehmber still brings notes back on the dates you name.

Android

Is Ehmber on Android?

Yes, it's on Google Play. It has the same capture ritual, the one question, returns, the heat stream and the weekly ehmbers, plus a home-screen widget and a two-pane layout on tablets and foldables.

Do notes sync between iPhone and Android?

Not automatically. iCloud sync is for Apple devices. On Android your notes are the same plain Markdown files, which you'll find in the Files app under Ehmber, so you can copy them across yourself.

On Android, a dated return arrives a few minutes late

Android delays alarms unless an app may schedule exact ones. In Ehmber's Settings under Returns, tap Allow next to Exact alarms, and returns arrive on the minute.
