Version status first, because everything else hangs off it. The current shipping version is iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, released Monday, September 14 at around 10 a.m. Pacific. The current beta is iOS 27.2 beta 1, seeded to developers on September 16 alongside iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, visionOS, and watchOS 27.2. iOS 27.1 was skipped in the beta channel entirely, and there is a reason for that further down.
One correction worth making, because I saw it stated wrong more than once this week: iOS 27 does not require an iPhone 15 Pro. That is the Siri AI requirement, not the OS requirement. Per Apple Support, iOS 27 installs on iPhone 11 and later, including the SE second and third generation, the 16e, the 17e, the iPhone Air, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, and the Duo (Source).
Siri AI shipped, and Google built the hard part
Apple released iOS 27 on September 14 with Siri AI, a ground up rebuild of the assistant. The pitch is personal context understanding, onscreen awareness, world knowledge, and multi step systemwide app actions. It can search your own Messages, Mail, and Photos, and answer questions about what is currently on screen. The part Apple said out loud, which is remarkable coming from Apple, is that the capabilities were "custom-built in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models." On device handles personal context, Spotlight indexing, App Toolbox, voice, and dictation on Apple's AFM Core Advanced model. Private Cloud Compute handles the frontier inference, and that layer is Gemini (Source).
The constraints are real and worth knowing before you write support docs. Siri AI requires an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, or iPhone 16 or later, plus M1 or later iPads and Macs, Apple Watch Series 9 or later, and Vision Pro. It is English beta only at launch, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish due in October. There are daily usage limits on server backed features, with paid expanded access promised later. It is not available in the EU at launch on iOS, iPadOS, or watchOS, it is withheld in China pending regulatory review, and it is blocked for users under 13. Apple also claims app launches up to 30% faster, photo library loads up to 70% faster, and AirDrop up to 80% faster.
My read, as someone who ships small apps: Siri AI routes user intent through App Intents, and Apple specifically called out third party integration, naming Microsoft Outlook, Notability, and Tripsy as coming. Apps that expose App Intents become reachable through the assistant. Apps that do not become invisible in the new interaction layer. That is the highest leverage item on my own list right now. The EU exclusion is the other practical one, because your EU users are getting a materially different product than your US users, and that affects your screenshots and anything in your marketing copy that mentions Siri.
Apple skipped 27.1 to hide the foldable
Two days after 27.0 shipped, on September 16, Apple seeded first betas of 27.2 across every platform with no 27.1 beta at all. The reason, per MacRumors, is that iOS 27.1 is a device specific fork that ships preinstalled on the iPhone Duo on October 23, and Apple jumped straight to 27.2 in the public developer channel so Duo specific code would not leak. Apple has not detailed when the two branches reconverge (Source). Expected in the 27.2 cycle: the October Siri AI language expansion, the return of two Apple Intelligence features pulled before 27.0 launch (Messages conversation suggestions and AI password fixes), and a reworked Health app. Apple's developer note also confirms that iOS 27.1 and macOS 27.1 are the final releases supporting Intel Macs via Rosetta.
Practically, your test matrix just forked three ways. There is 27.0, which is the install base. There is 27.1, which is Duo only and which you cannot get a beta of. And there is 27.2, where the next behavior changes land. Apple recommends Xcode 27.2 for the latest SDKs.
The Duo tooling landed today
Apple's first foldable was announced September 9 and starts at $1,999 for 256GB: a 5.4 inch outer display, a 7.6 inch inner display, the A20 Pro chip, a C2 modem, dual batteries rated up to 31 hours of video on the inner screen and 44 on the outer, a 48MP Dual Fusion rear system with a 12MP telephoto, an under display 1080p FaceTime camera, a titanium frame with a custom hinge of over 100 components, and Apple Pencil support on both displays. Pre orders open October 16, availability is October 23 in roughly 70 countries.
Today, September 18, Apple Developer published "Build for iPhone Duo with new resources": an Xcode 27.1 beta with iPhone Duo support, Figma and Sketch design kits, and workshops on optimizing for foldable screens (Source). This is the first genuinely new iPhone form factor since 2007 and it lands in five weeks. New screen geometry plus a fold and unfold continuity transition means layout bugs, guaranteed. It also means being one of the apps that looks correct on day one of a halo device is real, cheap visibility. You cannot test against an iOS 27.1 beta, but you can use the Xcode 27.1 beta simulator and the design kits.
Subscriptions got Bundles, Suites, and multiseat, and multiseat is on by default
This is the one I would read first if you monetize with subscriptions. Apple published "Get your subscriptions ready for iOS 27" on September 16, detailing three new mechanics. Bundles let a user buy multiple subscriptions in one transaction, spanning one app, several apps from one developer, or even apps from different developers, with Apple running the purchase UI. Suites are a single subscription that unlocks a set of apps from one developer. Multiseat purchasing comes in two forms: Volume Purchasing launches October 22, 2026 for organizations buying through Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager via a single in app purchase with seats assigned through their MDM, and Group Purchases launches winter 2026, where an individual buys multiple seats and invites others (Source).
Two things to act on right now. First, multiseat is enabled by default on all subscriptions in App Store Connect. You can disable it entirely or per channel, but the default is on, which means October 22 changes how your subscriptions can be bought whether you thought about it or not. Go look at your settings and make that an actual decision. Second, StoreKit 2 is required for all of it. If you are still on StoreKit 1 you are locked out of Bundles, Suites, and multiseat entirely. Bundles and Suites also require applying through a request form, so they are not just a toggle.
For anyone running a portfolio of apps rather than one app, and that includes me, Suites is a built in cross sell mechanism that simply did not exist before. That is worth thinking hard about before October.
App Tracking Transparency is changing in the EU
On September 16 Apple announced an alternative ATT system prompt arriving in iOS 27.2, with modified formatting and language plus an "Additional Information" button that lets developers surface detail about data linking and sharing with data brokers. In Germany, France, Italy, Poland, and Romania, apps must use only the alternative prompt for legal reasons. Elsewhere in the EU, developers may choose. The origin is Germany's Federal Cartel Office antitrust investigation, which concluded Apple's ATT rules disadvantaged third party apps relative to Apple's own services, and Apple agreed to a framework of changes to settle it. Reporting also indicates EU developers will be able to re prompt users about tracking one year after their initial choice, whether they accepted or declined (Source). Apple stresses the underlying permission requirement itself is unchanged. If you use any attribution or ad SDK and have EU users, check what your SDK vendor plans to do before 27.2 ships.
Two more, briefly
- The iPhone 18 Pro launched today, with pre orders having opened September 12. By September 14 shipping estimates had slipped into late September and October across nearly every configuration. Coverage is genuinely contradictory about what that means: MacRumors framed it as demand outstripping inventory, AppleInsider and PhoneArena read the same data as a slow start. I could not resolve it and would not act on either read (Source).
- Epic v. Apple is headed to the Supreme Court, with arguments beginning October 2026. One caution: I saw commission percentages for external purchase links quoted at 15% standard, 10% for video and news, and 5% under the Small Business Program, but other figures circulating conflict with those. Check Apple's own current guidelines before making any pricing decision on that basis.
What I am actually doing about it
Auditing App Intents coverage across the lineup first, because that is the one change that decides whether an app is reachable at all in the new assistant layer. Then App Store Connect, to make a deliberate call on multiseat before October 22 rather than discovering seat based pricing by accident. The Duo design kits can wait until next week, but not much longer than that.
Everything here reflects Apple Newsroom posts, Apple Developer releases, Apple Support documentation, and same-week reporting from MacRumors, 9to5Mac, AppleInsider, and Engadget, linked inline. Contradictory and single-outlet items are flagged as such. Verified September 18, 2026. If you want apps that keep the AI on the phone, the studio's full lineup is at jcmobileappstudio.com/apps.
