Gemini Spark on the Mac can take action on files stored locally, not just chat about them. Google's examples include sorting a messy Downloads folder into labeled subfolders, and pulling figures out of invoices saved on your machine to build a Workspace budget on a schedule. It also gained the ability to track topics in real time, so it can hand you highlights after your team plays or ping you when a stock crosses a line you set. The one question to ask
An agent that can touch your local files is powerful. The question worth asking before you turn it on is simple: when it does the work, where does the work happen? Does the sorting and the number-crunching run on your Mac, or do your files take a round trip to a server first? Those are two very different privacy stories wearing the same convenient coat.
This is not Google-specific and it is not a reason to panic. It is the right question to ask of any AI agent, from any company, that wants access to your machine. Cloud AI can be done responsibly, and on-device AI is not automatically private if an app quietly syncs the results. The point is that you should get to know the answer, and you should get to choose.
A quick checklist before you grant access
If you do try an agent like this, or any app that asks to read your files, three things are worth a look. First, what folders does it actually need, and can you scope it to one instead of your whole drive? Broad access is easy to grant and easy to forget. Second, what leaves the device, and is that spelled out in plain language rather than buried in a policy? Third, how do you turn it off, and does turning it off also delete what it stored? An off switch that leaves a copy behind is not really an off switch.
