On Monday I wrote about OnePlus replacing OxygenOS with ColorOS, phone by phone, starting next week. By Monday night the Samsung side of my feed was full of a different name change: One UI becoming "Galaxy OS." I own a Galaxy Z Fold8, so I read everything. Here's what's actually in the reports, and what isn't.
What's reported, in order of how much I trust it
The solid part comes from Ice Universe, who has a long record on Samsung. He says One UI 10 will be built on Android 18 and will bring "significant" and "unprecedented" interface changes. He hasn't said what those changes are. Secondary reports fill in the picture with a contextual home screen that pulls calendar events, locations and chats into one view so you jump between apps less, deeper on-device AI, and tighter continuity between phones, tablets and watches. That's consistent with where Samsung's been heading, but it's reporting layered on a tip, not a leaked build.
The Galaxy OS rename is a separate and thinner rumor. It's being discussed as a possibility, and Samsung hasn't confirmed anything. A name change wouldn't mean leaving Android, either. One UI is Android with Samsung's layer on top, and Galaxy OS would be the same thing with a new badge. Don't read it as a fork.
Timing: most reports say mid-2027, launching with the Galaxy Z Fold9 and Flip9. One says early 2028 with the Galaxy S28. Either way, this is not something your phone gets this winter. One UI 9 is what you're living with for a while.
And the one I'd watch closely: a few outlets are pairing this with the idea that Samsung will charge for advanced AI features. Samsung has hinted at that before for Galaxy AI after 2025, but there's no announced price, no feature list and nothing tied to One UI 10. Treat it as a question, not news.
Where One UI 9 stands right now
If you're on an older foldable, the better story this week is the current update, not the next one. Samsung has reportedly started sending the stable One UI 9 build to the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 in South Korea, but only to people who were in the beta program. It's about 485 MB and includes the October security patch. I've seen it described as a global rollout. It isn't yet. Other regions and non-beta phones should follow in stages, so check Settings, then Software update, and don't be surprised if it's not there.
I also saw a claim that Xiaomi pushed an October HyperOS patch to 15 devices fixing 25 flaws. I couldn't find that anywhere. Xiaomi's September patch and its big July one are real, the October one with those numbers I can't confirm, so I'm leaving it out.
What I'd ask for, as a Fold8 owner
One UI started in 2018 as the fix for phones getting too tall to use with one hand. Pulling the controls down to the bottom half of the screen was a real idea and it worked. The problem is that the phone I'm holding is two screens, one of them nearly square, and it talks to a watch, sometimes a tablet, and since this month a Googlebook. The reachability idea doesn't say anything about any of that. So if the redesign is real, three things.
First, make the inner screen a first-class layout instead of a stretched phone. Samsung's own apps are good at this. Half of the third-party ones still aren't, and the system could nudge harder, the way Apple is about to do with the Duo. Second, one notification and continuity model across the Googlebook, the watch and the phone, so I stop getting the same alert three times. Google's Better Together features that reached Galaxy phones earlier this month are a start, and Samsung's layer should build on them rather than ship a parallel version. Third, stop the AI sprawl. I have a Samsung assistant, a Google assistant and a dozen "AI" buttons in menus. A redesign that picks one and hides the rest would be the unprecedented change I'd actually notice.
I'll believe the name when it's on a slide at Unpacked. Until then, the honest summary is: a trusted leaker says the next big version is a big redesign, nobody official has said a word, and your Fold5 might finally get Android 17 before any of this matters.
Verified October 19, 2026. Ice Universe's tip and the redesign reports from Android Headlines, Sammy Fans and Gizmochina. The Galaxy OS name, the timeline and the paid AI question from Business Today and ETV Bharat. Fold5 and Flip5 stable rollout from Sammy Fans. Samsung has not confirmed One UI 10, a rename, a date or any paid features.
