Apple Vision Pro can now drive a wheelchair with your eyes.

As part of a broader accessibility update, Apple is letting the Vision Pro headset steer a compatible power wheelchair using nothing but the way you look around. For people who cannot rely on a joystick or hand controls, that turns eye tracking into a steering wheel. Here is what it does, who it helps, and where the limits sit.

Apple announced the feature on May 19, 2026, alongside a wider set of accessibility tools. Most of those updates are software, but this one is different. It uses the Vision Pro's precision eye tracking as a control input for a power wheelchair, so the headset reads where you are looking and translates that into movement. It is the kind of feature that does not make headlines for raw spec power, but quietly changes what a day can look like for someone who has been waiting for it. (Apple)

The idea is simple to describe and hard to build. A power wheelchair normally relies on a joystick or a set of hand controls. For people who cannot use those, that input method is a wall. Apple's update lets the Vision Pro headset stand in as the input, so eye tracking becomes the way you tell the chair where to go. You look, and the chair responds, with the headset doing the work of reading your gaze accurately enough to use in the real world.

At launch it works with the Tolt and LUCI alternative drive systems in the United States, and Apple says it supports both Bluetooth and wired connections through the right accessories. The company also says it will keep working with developers to add more wheelchair drive systems over time, so this is best understood as an early step rather than a finished platform. (Engadget)

Eye tracking is only useful for mobility if it is reliable, and reliability is exactly where most attempts fall down. Apple says the Vision Pro's tracking does not require frequent recalibration and works across a variety of lighting conditions. Those two details matter more than they sound. A mobility tool has to work when you go from a dim hallway into bright sun, and it cannot ask you to stop and recalibrate every time you change rooms. Building eye tracking that holds up outside a lab is the hard part, and it is what makes this practical rather than a demo. (9to5Mac)

It is worth being honest about the bigger picture. Vision Pro has spent its short life looking for a mainstream reason to exist, and most of the pitches have landed somewhere between impressive and unnecessary. This is one of the most meaningful things the headset has been asked to do. It also fits a long Apple pattern. Features that start as accessibility tools, like eye control and voice control on iPhone and iPad, tend to trickle out and benefit everyone in time. The work done to help a few people steer a wheelchair with their eyes is the same work that pushes the whole platform forward.

None of this is a finished solution, and it would be unfair to present it as one. It is United States only at launch, and it supports just two drive systems, Tolt and LUCI. It requires a roughly 3,500 dollar headset on top of compatible wheelchair hardware, and Apple has not detailed pricing or availability for the wheelchair accessories themselves. So the cost and the open questions are real. Most important, eye tracking here is an additional way in, not a replacement. It adds an access method for people who need one, and it does not replace the range of mobility hardware that people already depend on every day.

As a studio that builds on-device, accessibility-minded iOS apps, I notice this kind of work because it is genuinely hard and rarely rewarded. Making eye tracking dependable enough to steer a wheelchair, in real light, without constant recalibration, is patient engineering aimed at a small group of people who really need it. That is the part worth celebrating, the decision to spend real effort on the people standard inputs leave out. It is a good reminder of what technology is for when it is at its best.
