On-device versus cloud, the part that matters
The interesting thing about Apple Intelligence is where it runs. Everyday tasks like Writing Tools, notification summaries, and photo cleanup happen on the device itself, your content never leaves the phone. Bigger requests go to Apple's Private Cloud Compute, which is built so Apple cannot read your data, and independent researchers can inspect the software it runs.
That split is why the hardware requirement exists at all. Running language models locally takes about 8 GB of memory, which is what the supported chips have. It is also the design philosophy we build our own apps around: if the work can happen on your device, it should.
