Frequently asked questions
Getting started
What does Almanak do?
It shows wallpapers made by the studio and picks a different variant for dawn, day, dusk and night, plus the season's pack when it comes around. You preview each one as a Lock Screen and Home Screen on your own device, then save it or let it change on its own.
Is it really free?
Yes. No ads, no in-app purchases, no subscription and no account.
What do I need?
An iPhone or iPad on iOS 18 or later, a Mac on macOS 15 or later, or an Android phone, tablet, foldable or Googlebook on Android 8.0 or later. It also runs on iPhone Duo, on both screens.
What are dawn, day, dusk and night?
Fixed hours, so Almanak never needs your location: dawn from 5 AM, day from 8 AM, dusk from 5 PM and night from 8 PM.
How does it choose today's wallpaper?
It picks one set a day from your My Almanak sets and, when Follow the seasons is on, the pack that is in season. The set stays the same all day, and the variant changes with the hour. With nothing added and seasons off, it uses the Curves, Glass and City packs.
Changing the wallpaper
Why can't Almanak change my iPhone wallpaper by itself?
Apple does not let apps change the wallpaper on iPhone and iPad. (On Android and the Mac, Almanak does it by itself.) The Shortcuts app can, so Almanak gives Shortcuts the right picture. Add the ready-made Almanak shortcut once; then Set as Wallpaper in the app works with Lock, Home or Both, and the Set Up tab shows how to run it at dawn, day, dusk and night.
How do I set up the automation?
First set one Almanak picture as a photo Lock Screen by hand. Then in Shortcuts make a shortcut with Get Wallpaper for Now, then Set Wallpaper Photo pointed at that Lock Screen with Show Preview off, and add a Time of Day trigger at 5 AM. Copy it for 8 AM, 5 PM and 8 PM.
The automation asks me before it runs.
Turn off Show Preview on Set Wallpaper Photo, and make sure the automation is set to run without asking.
Can my Home Screen be different from my Lock Screen?
Yes. Set the Set Wallpaper Photo action to Lock Screen only, then add a second Get Wallpaper for Now with Screen set to Home Screen and a second Set Wallpaper Photo for the Home Screen.
How do I save a wallpaper by hand?
On iPhone and iPad, tap Save Lock and Home to Photos on the Now tab or on any set, then set it from the Photos app or in Settings, Wallpaper. On Android you don't need to: tap Set as wallpaper.
It says it needs permission to add photos.
Almanak only asks to add photos, never to see your library. Allow it in iOS Settings, Almanak, Photos, Add Photos Only.
Mac
How does the Mac version work?
It changes your desktop by itself at dawn, day, dusk and night, on every display. Turn on Change my desktop automatically on the Now screen. It keeps working from the menu bar when the window is closed.
Can it start when I log in?
Yes. Turn on Open at login in the app.
How do I stop it changing my desktop?
Turn off Change my desktop automatically on the Now screen or in the menu bar. Your desktop stays on the last picture until you change it.
Android
How does it change the wallpaper on Android?
By itself. Open the Automatic tab and turn on Change my wallpaper automatically. Almanak sets the wallpaper at dawn, day, dusk and night and picks the next day's set at midnight. There is nothing to build in another app.
Can it change just the Home Screen or just the Lock Screen?
Yes. On the Automatic tab, pick Home, Lock or Both under Which screen. When you set one by hand from Now or from a set, the same Home, Lock and Both choice sits above the Set as wallpaper button.
The change came a few minutes late.
That is normal. Android groups background work to save battery, so a change can arrive up to about ten minutes after the hour. If it is much later, check that battery saver or a battery optimization setting is not stopping Almanak in the background.
It stopped changing after I restarted my phone.
Open Almanak once. It re-arms the automatic change after a restart, a clock change or an update, but some phones hold background apps back until they are opened again.
Does it work in dark mode?
Yes. With Match dark mode on, Almanak uses a set's dark colorway when your phone is in dark mode.
Where do saved pictures go?
Save to Photos puts the picture in Pictures, Almanak, where your gallery app shows it. It needs Android 10 or later and no permission.
Does it work on tablets, foldables and Googlebooks?
Yes. On a tablet or an unfolded phone it shows two pages side by side, meeting at the fold. On a Googlebook or a Chromebook window it shows desktop wallpapers, resizes freely and works with a keyboard and mouse: Ctrl 1 to 4 switch tabs, Ctrl comma opens Settings and Esc goes back.
Can I turn off the vibration?
Yes. Turn off Touch feedback in Settings. Almanak also follows your phone's own touch feedback setting.
The colors don't match my phone.
Almanak uses the studio's purple by default. On Android 12 and later, turn on Match my system colors in Settings to use the colors from your wallpaper instead.
iPhone Duo
Does it support iPhone Duo?
Yes. It lays out in two pages on the open phone, previews both the cover and inner screens, and saves the inner-screen size, which also fills the cover screen.
The wallpapers
Where do the wallpapers come from?
Every design is made by the studio. The same collection is on jcmobileappstudio.com/wallpapers, and new packs show up in the app on their own, with no update.
Can I use them elsewhere?
For personal use on your own devices, yes. Please don't resell or redistribute the files.
Pictures are grey or missing.
The first time you view a wallpaper it downloads from our website. Check your connection. After that it is saved on your device and works offline.
How much space does it use?
Settings, Storage shows how much is downloaded and lets you clear it. Anything you need again downloads on demand.
Privacy
What does Almanak collect?
Nothing about you. No account, no analytics, no tracking. See the privacy policy for the full list.
