Renewl Privacy Policy

Renewl exists so you can track your subscriptions without handing an app your bank login. That promise only works if your data stays yours, so this policy explains, plainly, what the app does with your information.

Who we are

Renewl is made by JC Mobile App Studio LLC, a one-person studio based in Pennsylvania, USA. We are the operator of the app. "We" and "us" in this policy mean JC Mobile App Studio LLC. Contact: contact@jcmobileappstudio.com.

Short version

• No account, no bank connection, no analytics, no ads, no trackers, on either platform.
• Screenshots, receipts, statements, and shared items are read on your device. Scan images are not kept after the details are read, and they are never uploaded.
• The subscriptions you track are stored on your device. On iPhone they sync through your own private iCloud when you are signed in to iCloud. On Android, Google Drive sync is off until you connect it, and Android's own backup can include the app's data.
• We do not run a database of users and we never receive your subscription list.
• Renewl makes two automatic downloads that contain nothing about you: exchange rates from Frankfurter, and, for Pro users, a price-change list from our website. Like any web request, these reveal your IP address to the server.
• We never sell or share your personal data.

What we receive vs. what third parties receive

Data that reaches us (systems we operate):

• Price-change list (Renewl Pro). Once per launch, the app downloads a static file, jcmobileappstudio.com/apps/renewl/price-changes.json, from our website. The request carries no information about you or your subscriptions, but, like any web request, our host (Cloudflare Pages) sees your IP address and basic device and app information. We do not keep these requests. Cloudflare processes them under the Cloudflare privacy policy.
• Emails you send us. If you contact support, we receive what you write and your email address.

Data handled by third parties under their own policies:

• Apple: iCloud sync of your subscription list (iPhone), App Store purchases, and the Wallet data you choose to share through FinanceKit (read on your device). Apple Privacy Policy.
• Google on Android: Google Drive sync (if you connect it), Android backup, and Google Play purchases. Google Privacy Policy.
• Frankfurter (api.frankfurter.dev), a public exchange-rate service: once a day, the app asks for current rates. The request contains no personal data, but the service sees your IP address. See frankfurter.dev.

What Renewl does not collect

• We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, location, or contacts.
• We do not receive your subscriptions, receipts, statements, or spending.
• We never connect to your bank and never see your financial accounts.
• We do not use analytics, advertising SDKs, or trackers, on either platform.
• We cannot read your iCloud data or your Google Drive data.

How receipt scanning works

When you scan or pick a screenshot of a confirmation email, receipt, or bank statement, Renewl reads it on your device. On iPhone, Apple's Vision framework turns the image into text, and Apple's on-device Foundation Models extract the merchant, amount, billing cycle, and renewal or trial-end date. On Android, Google's ML Kit text recognition, bundled in the app, reads the text, and Android's on-device AICore (Gemini Nano) extracts the same details where your phone supports it. If on-device AI is unavailable, Renewl uses a built-in text reader that also runs on your device. The image and its text are not uploaded to us, to Apple, or to Google, and the image is not stored after scanning. Only the details you confirm are saved.

Statement import and Apple Wallet (iPhone)

You can import a bank or card statement file (CSV, OFX/QFX, or PDF) to find recurring charges. The file is parsed on your device and is never uploaded. On iPhone, if you allow it, Renewl can read Apple Card, Apple Cash, and Savings transactions through Apple's FinanceKit framework to spot recurring charges. That data is read on your device, only the subscriptions you choose to add are kept, and nothing is sent to us. You can revoke access at any time in iOS Settings, Privacy and Security, Wallet.

Charge detection from notifications (Android, optional)

Android has no equivalent to Apple Wallet access, so Renewl for Android offers an optional feature that spots charges from the notifications your bank, card, and wallet apps post. It only works if you turn it on in Settings and grant Renewl notification access in Android's settings. With access granted, Renewl can see the text of notifications from your other apps. It checks each one on your device for a charge (an amount plus a word such as "charged" or "payment") and ignores everything else. When it finds one, it stores only the merchant, amount, currency, date, and which app posted it, never the notification text, and shows it in an inbox on the Scan tab where you can track or dismiss it. Detected charges are deleted after 90 days. Nothing from this feature is sent to us or anyone else. You can turn it off in Renewl's Settings or by removing notification access in Android Settings.

Sharing a receipt into Renewl

If you share a receipt, screenshot, file, link, or text into Renewl from another app, using the iOS Share Sheet or Android's share menu, the item is handed to Renewl on your device and processed with the same on-device steps described above. It is not sent to us.

Where your data lives

Everything you track (merchant, price, billing cycle, dates, notes, tags, payment method label, people you split with, price history, and cancellation notes) is stored on your device. Home Screen widgets and the share extension read and write this through a private storage area on your device that only Renewl's own parts can use.

On iPhone, if you are signed in to iCloud and iCloud is allowed for Renewl, your subscription list syncs automatically through Apple's CloudKit to the private database of your own iCloud account. Apple encrypts CloudKit data in transit and at rest, and we cannot access it. To stop syncing, turn off iCloud for Renewl in iOS Settings, your name, iCloud.

On Android, your data is stored in a local database. Two things can carry it off the device, both under your control:

• Android backup. Renewl allows Android's own backup, which can copy the app's database (including subscriptions and detected charges) and settings to the Google account on the phone and to a new phone during transfer. That is Google's service, and you can turn it off in Android Settings.
• Google Drive sync (optional). If you connect it in Settings, you grant Renewl access to a hidden, app-private folder in your own Google Drive (Google's "appDataFolder" scope; Renewl cannot see your other Drive files). Renewl then writes one file with your subscription list and deletion markers, and updates it after changes. It is used only to move your list between your own devices, and we never receive it. Disconnecting sync in Renewl stops future syncing but does not delete the file or remove Renewl's permission. To do that, open Google Drive, Settings, Manage apps, find Renewl, and choose to delete its hidden data and disconnect it.

Backups you export

Renewl can export a backup file of your list, which you save wherever you choose, and restore from it later. That file is yours, and it is not sent to us.

Price watch, exchange rates, and cancel help

For Renewl Pro, the app checks a small public list of known price changes for popular services, hosted on our website, so it can flag a price change without a rescan. The app also fetches daily exchange rates from Frankfurter once a day, for every user, so totals in mixed currencies stay accurate. Neither request includes anything about you or your subscriptions, and both features fall back to data bundled in the app when offline. If you ask for cancellation help on a service Renewl does not know, it opens a Google search for that service's name in your browser.

Reminders and app lock

Reminders are local notifications scheduled on your device, on both platforms. No push server is involved. If you turn on the app lock, Face ID, Touch ID, or Android biometrics are checked by the operating system, and Renewl never receives your biometric data.

Purchases

Renewl Pro is a monthly or yearly auto-renewing subscription, handled by Apple's App Store on iPhone and Google Play on Android. Apple or Google processes the payment, and we never see your card, Apple ID, or Google account. The app checks your Pro status with the store on your device. Prices and any free trial are shown in the app before you buy, and you manage or cancel in your App Store or Google Play account settings.

Diagnostic information

On iPhone, if you opt in through iOS Settings, Privacy and Security, Analytics and Improvements, Apple may share anonymized crash reports and performance metrics with us. These do not include your subscription data. On Android, Renewl includes no crash-reporting or analytics SDK. If you have turned on sharing of usage and diagnostics in Android, Google Play may provide us with aggregated crash and performance statistics.

Sale, sharing, and targeted advertising

We do not sell your personal data, share it for targeted advertising, or use it for profiling. Renewl has no ads and no advertising SDK on either platform, and it does not use your advertising ID.

Data retention

• On your device: until you delete it in the app or uninstall Renewl. Detected charges on Android are removed after 90 days.
• iCloud (iPhone): in your iCloud until you delete it.
• Google Drive and Android backup: in your Google account until you delete it.
• Our website: we do not store the price-list requests. Cloudflare may keep request logs under its own policy.
• Support emails: kept as long as needed to help you, and deleted on request.

Delete your data

• Deleting the app removes everything Renewl stored on that device.
• iPhone: delete Renewl's iCloud data in iOS Settings, your name, iCloud, Manage Storage, or through Apple's tools at privacy.apple.com.
• Android: in Google Drive, Settings, Manage apps, delete Renewl's hidden app data and disconnect it. Manage Android backup in Android Settings or your Google account.

Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live (for example California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Texas, Oregon, Indiana, Kentucky, Rhode Island and other US states, or the EU/UK), you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or get a copy of personal data, and to opt out of targeted advertising, sale, or profiling. Many of these laws may not apply to a studio our size, but we honor these requests from everyone. Because Renewl keeps your data on your device and in your own iCloud or Google account, we usually hold nothing about you except any emails you have sent us.

To make a request, email contact@jcmobileappstudio.com. We respond within 45 days, and we will not discriminate against you for asking. If we decline your request, you can appeal by replying to our answer with "Appeal", and we will respond within 45 days (60 days at most, as some laws allow). If your appeal is denied, you may contact your state attorney general.

Children

Renewl is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, contact us and we will delete it.

International users

We are based in the United States. The little data we handle, such as support emails, is processed in the US. Apple, Google, Cloudflare, and Frankfurter may process data in other countries under their own policies.

Security

Renewl's network requests use HTTPS. Your data is protected by your device's passcode or biometrics, the optional in-app lock, and, if you sync, the security of your Apple or Google account. No system is perfectly secure, and we recommend a strong passcode and two-factor authentication on your Apple ID or Google Account.

Changes

If this policy changes, we will update the "Last updated" line above and post the new version at this URL. Material changes are also noted in the app's release notes.
