Apple this week: iOS 27.0.1, a $5.7 billion verdict, and what is coming in October

Apple shipped iOS 27.0.1 with fixes for Face ID restarts and a touchscreen freeze, a jury ordered it to pay $5.7 billion over Taptic Engine patents, and October brings the iPhone Duo, iOS 27.2, and a stack of rumored Macs and home gear. A plain rundown.

A bug fix update, a very large jury verdict, and a busy October ahead. Here is the Apple week in plain language.

Apple released iOS 27.0.1 today, September 28, two weeks after iOS 27. The release notes call out three fixes: (9to5Mac)

If you have not updated yet, plug in, make sure you have a recent backup, and go to Settings, General, Software Update. iPadOS 27.0.1 is out too, with general bug fixes.

On September 26, a federal jury in California found that Apple infringed two patents held by Taction Technology and awarded $5.7 billion in damages. The patents cover a "vibration module for applying vibrational tractions to a wearer's skin," and the case reaches back to the original Apple Watch and the iPhone 6s, the first devices built around the Taptic Engine. Apple said it "strongly disagree[s] with today's verdict and the damages awarded, which are entirely unsupported by the facts," says its Taptic Engine is "fundamentally different" from Taction's technology, and plans to appeal. Big patent verdicts are often cut down or overturned on appeal, so this is the start of a long process, not the final number.

The new Health app adds a "Health age" metric that uses Apple Watch data to compare your numbers against your actual age. I wear an Apple Watch Series 12 every day, so that is the 27.2 feature I am most curious about, though I want to see how Apple explains what goes into that number before I trust it. And since I work in English and Spanish every day, Spanish Siri AI is the other one I am watching. (9to5Mac)

These come from reports and leaks, not Apple, so treat them as possibilities: (MacRumors)

Bottom line: update to 27.0.1 now, watch for 27.2 in October, and if you are eyeing an iPad mini or Apple TV, it is worth waiting a few weeks to see what Apple actually announces.
