Your Chromebook gets updates until 2034. Whether it gets Googlebook OS is a different question.

Google confirmed ChromeOS will keep getting updates through mid-2034, and said many of its newest Chromebooks will be able to move to Googlebook OS. It has not said which ones. What that means if you own a Chromebook, manage a school fleet, or are thinking about buying one now.

When the Googlebook laptops were announced, I wrote about what a Googlebook actually is: a laptop running Googlebook OS, which is built on Android but borrows ChromeOS's desktop style multitasking and the full Chrome browser. The obvious question was what happens to the Chromebooks people already own. This week, Google gave a partial answer.

Google has not published a list of which Chromebooks qualify, or when the move happens. Chrome Unboxed's guess is that premium models with recent processors and 8 to 16 GB of RAM make the cut, while 4 GB budget and school models stay on ChromeOS. That is an educated guess, not a Google list. (Chrome Unboxed)

Since 2023, Google has promised about ten years of updates for newer Chromebooks. A Chromebook that launched this year would normally have expected support into about 2036. A ChromeOS wide ceiling of mid-2034 cuts that by roughly two years, unless the device is one that gets to move to Googlebook OS. (Tech Insider)

Practical advice: if you are shopping for a Chromebook right now, do not assume the ten year promise still holds. Look for whether a model is confirmed for Googlebook OS before you buy, and if Google has not said, treat 2034 as the end date.

Google says there are about 50 million Chromebooks in schools, and most of those are the budget models that are likely to stay on ChromeOS. The good news is that nothing stops working tomorrow. Those devices keep their update dates. The harder part is planning. Reports also say management licenses for existing fleets will not carry over to Googlebook OS, which matters for districts that budget years ahead. Google has not laid that out in detail yet, so treat it as reported, not final. (Tech Insider)

To see a Chromebook's own end date, go to Settings, About ChromeOS, Additional details, and look for the Update schedule.

Googlebook OS is built on Android, so a laptop is now an Android device. That means Android apps will increasingly run in big resizable windows with a keyboard and mouse, not just full screen on a phone. I am porting my apps to Android right now and testing on a Pixel and a Galaxy Fold8, and the biggest lesson so far is how much layout work changes between form factors. A laptop sized window is one more layout to get right.

Bottom line: if you own a Chromebook, it is not dead, and you have years of updates left. If you are buying one now, 2034 is the date to plan around unless Google says your model moves to Googlebook OS.
