Your OnePlus ColorOS 17 update came a week early. It's optional, you can roll back, and here's what I'd do with it

Last week I published OnePlus's Android 17 schedule and told you to treat each date as "the earliest you might see it." OnePlus then beat its own dates by a week, which is not how these things usually go. Here's the corrected picture, and the part I got wrong.

The published schedule said October 29 for the OnePlus 15 and Pad 4, and October 30 for the 15R, 13 and 13s. What happened instead: the stable ColorOS 17 build for the OnePlus 15 and the Pad 4 started rolling out in India on October 21, about a week early. (9to5Google) The OnePlus 13, 13s and 15R followed between October 25 and 27, also in India, and the 13R, which was scheduled for November, came along with them. (Android Authority) On Wednesday, OnePlus edited the OnePlus 15 thread to add the North American and European builds. (OnePlus Community)

These are stable builds, not betas. The 15 had a short open beta first. The download is around 3.4 GB if you're coming from ColorOS or OxygenOS 16, about 500 MB from the beta. If you own one of the six phones above and haven't seen it, it's rolling out in batches, and the manual check is Settings, then System and updates, then Software update.

For the other 18 devices the schedule I published last week still stands, with the 13R moved up: the Open, 12, Nord 6, Nord CE6 and Pad 3 in November; the 12R, 11, Nord 5, Nord CE6 Lite, Nord CE5, Pad 2 and Pad Go 2 in December; the Nord 4, N6, N6x, N6 Lite and Pad Lite in the first quarter of 2027. Given this week, I'd now read those dates as "roughly," in both directions.

I wrote that when your OnePlus gets Android 17, "it switches to ColorOS." That made it sound automatic. It isn't. OnePlus's July announcement, the same one that ended new phone launches in North America and Europe, says owners of eligible devices "will have the option to voluntarily update to the latest ColorOS." The FAQ goes further: if you update to ColorOS, "they will be able to roll back to OxygenOS," with the specific versions to be announced. (OnePlus)

So the honest version is: there is no OxygenOS 17. If you want Android 17, it comes as ColorOS. If you'd rather keep OxygenOS, you stay on OxygenOS 16 with maintenance updates, and if you try ColorOS and hate it, OnePlus says you can go back. The OnePlus 15 thread already links an OxygenOS 16 rollback package for India, with the North American and European ones listed as "TBD." I'd want to see that TBD filled in before I called the promise kept, but it's a better deal than I described.

The branding is global, though. There's no OxygenOS-badged Android 17 anywhere, including the US builds posted Wednesday. OnePlus itself never used the word "retired." The press did. The thread announcing the stable build still has boilerplate at the bottom pointing to "Your Fast Track to OxygenOS Updates," which tells you how fast this happened inside the company too.

Oppo's tagline is "Silky Smooth. Flow with AI." Strip the marketing and here's what the changelog supports. (Oppo)

Also missing, per Android Police: Google's App Bubbles from stock Android 17. Skins always trade a few platform features for their own, and that's one.

I test my Android ports on a Pixel 11 Pro XL and a Galaxy Z Fold8, and I still don't own a OnePlus. But the opt-in detail changed my read of this whole story. A company winding down in your country that still gives you a choice and a way back is doing the right thing by its existing customers, and I should have said so last week instead of writing it as a fait accompli.

Verified October 28, 2026. Rollout dates from 9to5Google, Android Authority and the OnePlus 15 stable thread, whose timestamps are October 21 and 22 with the NA and EU builds added October 28. The opt-in and rollback wording is from OnePlus's July 16 announcement and its FAQ. The published schedule is from 9to5Google. Feature claims are Oppo's and OnePlus's own and are not independently tested. The Samsung item is a rumor from a tipster, unconfirmed by Samsung.
