What is that fund fee really costing you?

A 0.75 percent fee sounds like nothing. Compounded over 30 years, it can quietly take a six-figure bite out of a retirement account. Compare two expense ratios below, say a broad index fund against an actively managed fund. Everything runs in your browser, nothing is saved or sent anywhere.

Fund A ends with$0
Fund B ends with$0
Fee difference costs $0

Model: monthly compounding of contributions at the stated return, with each fund's expense ratio subtracted from the return. Real returns vary year to year, the fee drag is the part that is guaranteed.

The only lever you fully control

You cannot control market returns, but you fully control what you pay to be in the market. Broad index funds now charge 0.02 to 0.10 percent, while plenty of actively managed funds and older 401(k) menu options still charge 0.5 to 1 percent or more for performance that, over long periods, mostly fails to beat the index after fees. The fee compounds against you every single year, in up markets and down.

Educational tool, not investment advice. Check your actual funds' expense ratios in their fact sheets or your plan documents.
