How the September cycle goes
Apple ships weekly developer betas from June through August, then goes quiet for a few days before the iPhone event. The release candidate (RC) appears on event day or the day after, and the public release follows five to seven days later, usually the Monday before the new iPhones reach customers. The table above is the last four years of that pattern.
Which build should you be on?
Daily phone: stay on the public release until the .1 update, or at minimum until the RC. The RC is the same build that ships to everyone, so it is the first beta that is really safe. Spare device: developer beta all summer is fine, and it is how I test the apps.
Getting off the beta
Settings, General, Software Update, Beta Updates, Off. You stay on your current build until the next public release, then update normally. You cannot downgrade without wiping the phone, which is the one thing to know before installing any beta on a phone you rely on. The Beta Readiness Check walks through the rest.
Dates marked expected are estimates from Apple's pattern in previous years, not announcements. Apple does not pre-announce beta or release dates.
