🇨🇴 The last match of the night: Colombia 1, Ghana 0
Jhon Arias put Colombia ahead in the 14th minute and that was it. One goal, ninety plus minutes of Ghana pushing and Colombia's back line holding the line at Arrowhead Stadium. No extra time drama, no penalties, just a tight, well-earned win that sent the Black Stars home and Colombia into the Round of 16.
It capped off a wild Friday of Round of 32 finishes. Earlier in the day, Egypt needed penalties to get past Australia after a 1-1 draw through extra time, winning it 4-2 from the spot. Then Argentina survived a real scare against Cape Verde, needing extra time and an own goal in the 111th minute to escape 3-2. Messi's still doing Messi things at this World Cup, but Cape Verde made the defending champions sweat for it.
Colombia's win was the calm one by comparison. Sometimes the best World Cup moments are the ones where a team just does its job and doesn't blink. Colombia now moves on to face Switzerland in the Round of 16.
Today: the Round of 16 actually begins
Saturday, July 4 is when the bracket stops messing around. Two games on tap.
Canada vs. Morocco, 1 p.m. ET at NRG Stadium in Houston. Canada, one of three co-hosts this tournament, has already made history just by getting here, this is the deepest a Canadian men's team has ever gone at a World Cup. Morocco has been one of the more entertaining teams to watch all tournament and will be a serious test.
France vs. Paraguay, 5 p.m. ET at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. France comes in as one of the favorites to go deep, Paraguay is the scrappy underdog nobody wants to face in a knockout game. This is the kind of matchup where an early goal changes everything.
Two games, two very different flavors, both worth clearing your evening for.
Why the Round of 16 matters more than people think
Group stage is fun. Round of 32 is where things get nervy. But the Round of 16 is where the tournament actually narrows down to teams that have proven, twice now, that they can win when it counts. No more free passes for a bad first half. Lose today and you're done for four years.
That's the whole appeal of a knockout bracket versus a regular season. Every single match from here carries the weight of an entire cycle. Ghana found that out the hard way Friday night. Sixteen teams find out today and over the next few days who's next.
