How overtime pay works
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, most hourly workers earn at least time and a half, that is 1.5 times their regular rate, for every hour over forty in a single workweek. This tool uses that weekly rule, so it splits your hours into regular hours up to the threshold and overtime hours above it, then adds the two together to show your gross pay for the week.
The total here is gross pay, the amount before taxes and withholding come out, so your take home will be lower. The federal rule looks only at the weekly total, but some states, for example California, Alaska, and Nevada, also require daily overtime after a set number of hours in one day, which a weekly total does not capture. Tipped roles and salaried roles follow different rules again, so treat this as a starting estimate, not a final paycheck.
This page is general information, not legal, tax, or payroll advice. The figures shown are estimates of gross pay before taxes and withholding. Federal, state, and local rules vary and change over time, and daily overtime, tipped wages, and salaried pay can change the result. Check your state labor laws, your employer or HR, or an employment attorney for your situation.
